Mental & Emotional Health

Mental and emotional health is a pressing and sensitive topic in today’s complex society, particularly for those who understand its significance. To address this educational gap in these matters and support marginalized and underprivileged girls, Power Her Wings aims to identify, support, and educate them. We want to help them analyze mental health issues, remove the stigma surrounding them, and confidently combat them, so they can lead healthier and more productive lives. In India, millions of underprivileged girls face various challenges like parental neglect, limited education opportunities, child abuse, gender inequality, child marriage, and financial constraints. These challenges can greatly affect their emotional and mental well-being. Studies show that around 7.5% of the Indian population suffers from mental illness, with women being disproportionately affected. Shockingly, India accounts for 20% of female suicide deaths worldwide. Going by NFHS – almost every second woman in India is anaemic. India is home to the largest number of child brides in the world with 223 million child brides, a third of the world total. Sometimes, these girls might not even realize or understand the stress and anxiety they experience. If these issues are suppressed, they can have serious consequences such as body image problems, lasting childhood trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, depression, anxiety, self-harm, substance abuse, low self-esteem, social isolation, struggles in academics.

At Powerherwings, we are trying to provide counselling and support to help these girls understand, accept, and cope with their mental and emotional challenges. Through this, we aim to empower them, increase their awareness, and provide them with the tools they need to lead stronger, more confident, and educated lives.
